Here
we'll answer a few questions about fabrics:
Q.
What is barkcloth? Does it bite? 'Splain it to me, Libby!
A.
For cryin' out loud, no it doesn't bite! "Barkcloth"
is a soft, thick, slightly textured fabric so named because it
has a rough surface like that of tree bark. Barkcloth is usually
made of densely woven cotton fibers. Historically, the fabric
has been used in home furnishings, such as curtains, drapery,
upholstery, and slipcovers. It is often associated with 1950s
and 1960s home fashions. Its texture and diversity of colors and
design make it an excellent material for pillows.
Q.
What is Chenille? And where can I find it?
A. Ah, my little caterpillar, let me tell you. Chenille, is
the French word for...caterpillar! and is used to describe a type
of fabric. Fabrics, such as mohair and wool, get their names from
the fibers from which they are made. Chenille, however, is named
after the process from which it is manufactured. Chenille is made
by wrapping short lengths of fabric, called "piles"
around a tightly wound core of yarn. The edges of these piles
then stand at right angles from the yarns core, giving chenille
both its softness and its characteristic look. In the 1930s, usage
for chenille became widely desirable for throws, bedspreads, and
carpets. You can find Chenille in my shop - in all sorts of cool
designs and products. FYI - take a look at the background on this
website - Chenille!
Q.
What is that damn Damask anyway?
A.
Hey, watch your mouth - this is a family website! Damask
weaves come made in linen, cotton, synthetic or blended fibers.
Damask is most commonly found in table linens. The damask cloth
for table or bedding are most commonly made of flax or tow yarns,
but sometimes made partly of cotton or synthetic fibers. The finer
damask textiles are made of the best linen yarn, and although
the latter is of a brownish, ecru color during the weaving processes,
the ultimate fabric color of damask is pure white.
